Caelum Fiano Gran Reserva, Mendoza, Argentina 2021

Caelum Fiano Gran Reserva, Mendoza, Argentina 2021
Bodega Caelum is an independent producer in Mendoza, Argentina, growing some typical varietals like Malbec, but is also the only one in Argentina to grow the native Italian white grape, Fiano. The wine is given the Gran Reserva treatment, and aged for a full year in 100% new barrels, but in a very cold cellar which blocks malolactic fermentation. This all means you get a wine with big texture and body, but crisp acidity and none of the buttery aspect of oak.
Fiano is known for more tropical fruit notes than other Italian whites, and when fully ripened on the slopes of the Andes it develops these notes in spades. Apricot and pineapple on the nose with subtle hints of vanilla and minerally petrol, leading into a full palate with a lip-smacking finish that lingers with some toasty pineapple notes. For a dry white, this is seriously complex and generous, especially at this price.
