Château Auney l'Hermitage Graves, Bordeaux, France 2019

Sylvie and Christian Auney assembled their 8.5 hectare domaine from ten separate plots, most of which were simple clearings in the forest planted to make wines for personal consumption. Some of these plantings date back to the 1800's and have never seen modern chemical treatments or known anything other than hand-management. Reclaiming these parcels from near total abandonment, the Auney's chose to preserve the history of separation and organic viticulture, resulting in a handful of distinct terroirs and varying harvest dates each year.

The estate produces only four wines, with the most important being this Graves rouge, coming from 4 hectares (nearly half of their holdings) but producing a humble 1,500 cases or so a year. The wine is rich but pure, showcasing the gravelly clay soils on the nose, with a balance of fresh plum and clove spice, and soft chalky tannins that fade beautifully. An amazing value from one of the last truly small grower-producers in Bordeaux.
