Pascal & Nicolas Reverdy 'A Nicolas' Sancerre Rouge, France 2019
Pascal & Nicolas Reverdy 'A Nicolas' Sancerre Rouge, France 2019
For many people when they think of Sancerre, Sauvignon Blanc often comes to mind. However, this Loire Valley sub-region is also home to exceptional red wines crafted from the Pinot Noir grape.
Sancerre is also where producer Pascal et Nicolas Reverdy farm about 18 hectares of vines of both Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Situated on the steep slopes of Maimbray, most of the vineyards rest on calcareous clay soils that are approximately 157 to 152 million years old, locally referred to as terre blanche or "white earth." Additionally, a specific plot of Pinot Noir, used for the “à Nicolas” cuvée, lies in the lieu-dit “Les Garennes,” between Sancerre and Bué, where the limestone-rich soil further enhances the wine's distinct character.
The 2019 vintage is an example of the elegance and versatility of Pinot Noir produced on the region’s unique terroir. This wine is expressive, with aromas of wild red berries, cherries, and hints of violets, layered with subtle earthy undertones and a whisper of spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky texture, balancing vibrant acidity with fine-grained tannins. The finish is polished and lingers with notes of cranberry and minerality.
