Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey
Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey
Kentucky whiskey doesn't have to be called Bourbon to be good. This richly wheated whiskey from Heaven Hill Distillery (makers of Henry McKenna Bourbon and Rittenhouse Rye) meets all but one of the requirements to be called a Kentucky Bourbon; it is not made with at least 51% corn. It is, however, aged for a solid 7 years in charred new oak and produced in Kentucky, and in every way satisfies what we all look for in a good bourbon. It is soft and smooth, with a round mouthfeel and toasty oak and vanilla notes, while also dry and lively in a way that is reminiscent of rye whiskey.
The high percentage of wheat in the mash bill gives this a lifted and drier character than Bourbon, with a bit softer and less spicy flavor than rye. It drinks like a nice middle ground between Bourbon and rye, and would be just as welcome in a Manhattan as an Old Fashioned, and perhaps superior to either for a whiskey sour. This versatility makes it an excellent bottle for a small bar, but its unique style also earns it a place in the collection of anyone who wants a wide variety of whiskey choices.
