La Visciola 'Vicinale', Cesanese del Piglio, Lazio, Italy 2021
Piglio, located in southern Lazio, is one of Italy's hidden treasures. This roughly 4-hectare (with wines made in a genuinely tiny garage) is owned and operated by vignaiolo Piero Macciocca. All of Macciocca's vines of Cesanese were planted in the 1960s, and they've been farmed organically since then. In addition to caring for old vines, Macciocca has implemented biodynamic farming since 2005. There's life in Macciocca vineyards. He plants legumes and nitrogen-fixing plants between the rows. There are fruit trees interspersed at random, incorporating old pergola training systems of past times. This is a pocket of Italy where tradition has not been forgotten. The wines show a delicate rusticity to them, earthy and mushroomy, and the perfect balance of red fruit.
