Chateau du Tertre Margaux, Bordeaux 2010
Chateau du Tertre Margaux, Bordeaux 2010
Chateau du Tertre is planted as one single vineyard along two gravelly hills which are among the highest in Margaux. At just over 52 hectares in size, this is one of the few Grand Cru Classe vineyards that has remained the same size since the 1855 classification. In biodynamic conversion since 2008, higher planting densities are achieved as old parcels are replanted. The vine age is still impressive, with an average age of at least 40 years, and some of the older Cabernet Franc reaching 70 years old.
Since 1995 the estate has eschewed machine harvesting and continues to hand-harvest the entire vineyard. The location on these tall gravelly hills next to a large forest and stream creates a cool micro-climate lending freshness to the wines compared to other Margaux producers. The wine is aged in an average of 50% new French oak barrels for around 18 months before bottling. The excellent 2010 vintage has aged gracefully, and this is an excellent Bordeaux to enjoy on a special occasion on a cold winter night.
