Chateau Haut-Segottes Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux 2020
Chateau Haut-Segottes Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux 2020
Chateau Haut-Segottes is run by one of the most meticulous and experienced vignerons in Bordeaux, Madame Meunier. Her cellar is impeccably organized and her vineyards are hand-managed by her trio of master gardeners. The organic vineyards are planted to 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and just 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Their Grand Cru red is predominantly Cabernet Franc and exemplifies the level of depth this varietal can achieve, with the help of some Merlot backbone and perhaps a touch of the tiny annual yield of Cab Sauv. The fruit is all hand-harvested and native-yeast fermented, of course. Unlike their 'Petit Corbin' this wine does see some new oak during elevage, about 20% during its 18 months in barrel.
All of this adds up to an exceptionally age-worthy Bordeaux that is full, but with soft tannins and enchanting spice aromas. On the palate, red fruit intertwines elegantly with tobacco and black pepper notes in this structured St-Emillion from the excellent 2020 vintage.
