Macari 'Dos Aguas' Red, North Fork of Long Island, New York 2022
Macari 'Dos Aguas' Red, North Fork of Long Island, New York 2022
Macari produces some of the finest grapes grown on Long Island, thanks to the family's devotion to truly sustainable hands-on viticulture. Joseph Jr. and Alexandra Macari planted the family vineyard in 1995, and after Joseph Jr. studied with some of the great names in biodynamic viticulture he began holistic management of the property, complete with cattle and a whole field devoted to compost. Now in the third generation, the next Joseph Jr. has succeeded as Vineyard Manager, his sister Gabriella is Director of Operations, and worldwide vine veteran Byron Elmendorf has taken charge of the cellar.
Dos Aguas is a blend named for fact that Macari's vineyards stretch between two waters: the Peconic Bay to the south, and Long Island Sound to the north. The 2022 Dos Aguas red is a classic Long Island blend dominated by Merlot and all it's juicy black-fruited goodness, with the peppery depth and supple tannins from the other Bordeaux varietals grown on the North Fork. It has great structure with ripe fruit and notes of baked blackberry and beach plum.
2022 was one of the best vintages ever for Long Island, due to the hot and dry weather. Cabernet Sauvignon excels in a year like this, so the blend is higher in Cab Sauv and lower in Merlot than previous years. The wine aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, of which only 9% were new.

Pairing: Seared Long Island duck breast with a Merlot reduction
Viticulture: Sustainable, practicing organic and biodynamic
