Ruppert-Leroy 'Puzzle' Brut Nature, Champagne, France 2021
Ruppert-Leroy 'Puzzle' Brut Nature, Champagne, France 2021
Ruppert-Leroy is located in the village of Essoyes in the Aube, just a few kilometers from the Burgundian border. Bénédicte is the second generation winemaker and together with her father, Bénédicte has transformed the domaine from organic to biodynamic without the use of sulfur since 2013.
2021 was an extremely difficult year for the winery, thanks to extreme hail, so they weren't able to make their typical single-vineyard wines. 'Puzzle' is a compilation of the fruit they were able to harvest in 2021, along with a bit of organically-grown grapes purchased from friends in the Aube. This cuvée is lean and chiseled, perhaps more-so than the Papillon that is usually produced in a fairer vintage.
Pairing: Oysters
Grapes: 50 % Pinot Noir 50% Chardonnay, no dosage or added sulfur
Soil: Clay and limestone with various portions of red clay, gray clay, and white limestone
Viticulture: Biodynamic, no sulfur, natural
Viniculture: All cuvées are made using the same process: vinification with natual yeasts without any fining or filtering. Cold settling occurs naturally with the winter frosts. Alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and nine months of élevage on fine lees occur in 225 L barrels and 500L demi-muids.
